the monstering of abigail hobbs

This is a piece on Abigail Hobbs as an avatar for how Hannibal is in fact not merely hyper-aware of the role of women in the horror porn/crime procedural genre, and how it is both illustrating it in action in a multitude of ways; how it is subverting it; and how it is using abigail as a centerpiece of victimhood being manipulated slowly into an (un?)willing monster by the events and persons around her.

i recommend you read this excellent discussion of how in the first place Hannibal is most emphatically anything but a mindless and gratuitous horror porn, because i’m working off this assumption, and furthermore it deeply irritates me when people who have not even seen the show properly characterize it on freeze-frames of the show whose very purpose is to re-contextualize all the typical horror tropes

Okay, clearly: Hannibal is a shamelessly blatant metaphor for a lot of things; for the commentary on good vs evil/monsters vs humanity, for capitalism’s conspicuous and obscene overconsumption (see: fuller’s running joke of “everything is people”, explicit solyent green quote which itself was a movie about how the literal and figurative cannibalism of others is what fuels the system); for the horror genre as a whole. I’m working off the last one, and taking it to see how, in fact, through the character of Abigail Hobbs, is has done magnificently in giving a lot of agency and wonderfully disturbed depth and power to a female character, through subverting and internalizing the role that females generally play in crime procedurals.

o mfg same i was curious about the tag when a few people on my dash were like ‘the hannibal fandom is so terrible and bad and ugh’ and i was like??? wait a minute last time i checked [which was a few weeks ago], there were a lot of: funny posts, really cool meta, beautiful edits…

now it’s just

artfortheroad renegade interrupted: Completely agree about the Hannibal fandom. A few weeks ago, the hannibal tag was filled with gorgeous edits and lots of interesting episode/character analyses. Now I swear to god, there are more posts about the hannibal fandom itself in the hannibal tag than the actual show. And most of the other posts are just about shipping. It's such an amazing show, but looking through the tag on tumblr has become awful.
